Choosing a month in four lines
- June to September is the safe answer. Dry, breezy, cooler, and busiest. July and August are the European holiday peak.
- February is the best month in the water. Hottest, flattest sea, best visibility, and the reason divers and snorkellers come then.
- April and May are the ones to avoid. The long rains. Cheapest month of the year, and the only period where the weather can genuinely spoil a week.
- October and November are the value window. Warm, calm sea, afternoon showers rather than washouts, and prices well below the peak.

The four windows, and what each one costs you
Every month here is a trade between three things: how likely the weather is to hold, how many people are on the beach, and what the room costs. No month wins all three.
June to October

The south east trade winds bring dry air and clear skies for five months. Nights are cooler, which people rarely expect and mostly enjoy. The sea drops to 25 degrees in August, still warm. This is the window that will not disappoint you, and June and September are the two months where it costs half of what August does.

February
The one people miss- Weather

A gap between the two rainy seasons that most guides skip over. The sea is at its warmest, 29 degrees, and the underwater visibility is the best of the year. It is humid in a way July is not, and short showers happen, but the odds are good and the diving is better here than at any other time.

November and early December
The cheap gamble that usually pays- Weather

- The quietest the island gets outside April

- Low season rates until about 20 December
The short rains are nothing like the long ones. A heavy hour in the afternoon, then it clears. You lose the odd afternoon, not the week, and you pay considerably less for the room. The risk is real but small, and it is the best value on the calendar if you can live with a plan B.

March to May

Rain most days, heavy cloud in between, a churned up sea that closes the boat trips and visibility underwater that makes diving pointless. Some hotels close entirely for April. The saving is genuine and so is the reason for it. Early March still works if you are flexible.

Two things the calendar will not tell you
Ramadan moves through the year, eleven days earlier each time. Beach resorts run normally, but Stone Town changes character: many local restaurants close during daylight, and the evenings come alive after sunset. It is a good time to be here if you want to see the island rather than the beach, and an awkward one if you wanted lunch out.
The other is the tide, and it has nothing to do with the season. On the east coast the sea withdraws several hundred metres twice a day, every day of the year. No month fixes that, and it decides your afternoon more reliably than the forecast does.
The best time for diving and snorkelling
February and October, and it is not close. Both sit between the wind seasons, which means flat water, and both give visibility in the twenty to thirty metre range on a good day.
July to September has the most reliable weather on land and the worst conditions underwater, because the trade winds chop the surface and lengthen every boat ride. Divers who come in August tend to be here for something else.
April and May are unusable. The long rains cut visibility to a few metres and a great many dive centres simply close for the season.
For Mnemba specifically, February is the month people plan a trip around.
The best time for kitesurfing
Two seasons, and they suit different riders. The kusi, from June to September, is the strong one: steady wind in the high teens to twenties of knots and the reason the international crowd fills Paje in those months.
The kaskazi, from December to February, is lighter and warmer, which makes it the better window for a first course. It is also less reliable, with days that simply do not deliver.
April and May are flat. Nobody schedules a kite trip then, and the schools reduce staff.
The cheapest time to come
April and May, by a distance, because it is the long rains and demand collapses. Rooms go for half their high season rate and some places close rather than discount further.
It is genuinely cheap and it is cheap for a real reason. Rain on most days, a churned sea and cancelled boat trips are not a bargain if the point of the trip was the beach.
November is the honest budget answer. Short afternoon showers rather than days of grey, an island that is close to empty, and rates that sit well below the peaks. What a week actually costs has the numbers.

January and February are hot, humid and mostly dry, with the warmest sea of the year at 29 degrees. February is the driest of the two and the best month underwater.
March turns during the month: the first fortnight still works, the second does not. April is the wettest month of the year and the one to avoid outright. May is wet with an improving trend in the last week.

What is the best month to visit Zanzibar?
August has the most reliable weather but the highest prices and the most people. June and September give you nearly the same weather for considerably less. February is the best month underwater. If someone had to pick one, September.
What is the worst month to visit Zanzibar?
