Kilindi Zanzibar review: is it worth the price?

For a couple who wants privacy above everything else, yes. Kilindi has only fifteen pavilions on roughly 50 acres of garden at Kendwa, so you rarely see another guest outside dinner. Each one has its own plunge pool, an outdoor shower and a butler. The architecture is the other draw: white domes and arches by the architect Neil Rocher, a mix of Scandinavian restraint and Arab drama, built at first for Benny Andersson of ABBA according to its operator. The windows have no glass, and the sea breeze cools the rooms.

Guests seem to agree. On Tripadvisor it scores 4.8 out of 5 from 545 reviews, ranks first of eight places to stay in Kendwa and holds a Travelers' Choice award for 2026. Rooms and service both score 4.9. The lowest sub-score is value, at 4.6, which tells you where the doubts lie.

The same complaints come up again and again, and the glossy reviews skip most of them. The sea goes far out at low tide, so the beach is not always a swimming beach. The open-plan bathrooms are reached by steps, which some guests find awkward at night. Beds are on the firm side. Several pavilions sit up to ten minutes' walk uphill from the pool and restaurant. And Stone Town is a long drive away.

Our read: book it for a honeymoon or a quiet week for two, in September to mid December when rates are lowest. The all inclusive rate is high, but it covers wine and spirits, so the bill at checkout stays small. Skip it if you travel with children, want to swim in the sea at any hour, or like having restaurants outside the gate.

Kilindi Zanzibar villas: fifteen pavilions with a plunge pool

Every pavilion has a private plunge pool, a rainfall shower outside, a baraza (a Swahili stone bench terrace), air conditioning, a minibar, a safe and Wi-Fi. The hotel sells them in a few categories, but it does not publish sizes or how many of each there are.

Which pavilion at Kilindi to book

The pavilions are spread over a slope, so the number on your door matters more than the category. Travel+Style, which stayed there, picks pavilion 9 as the best balance of privacy and distance to the pool, beach and restaurant. Pavilions 3, 5 and 11 have roof gardens. Pavilions 14 and 15 are lovely and the furthest from everything, which suits a couple who plans to stay put.

Guests also note that an ocean view villa can feel less private than a garden view one, because it sits higher and closer to the paths. If the walk is a concern, ask for a pavilion near the main building when you book, not at check-in.

Kilindi Zanzibar prices in 2026

Elewana's rate page was offline when we checked, and the hotel quotes on request. Here is what safari agents showed on 28 October 2026. All prices are per person per night, two sharing, all inclusive.

SourcePriceWhat it covers
Go2AfricaAbout $820 per person a night4 January to 28 February 2026, sharing, all inclusive
Safari.co.zaFrom $809 per person a nightAugust 2026, Fully Inclusive Plus, sharing

Go2Africa$685 to $1,163 per person a nightFull range across 2026, depending on season and villa

For two people, that means roughly $1,350 a night in autumn and over $2,100 at Christmas. The cheapest window runs from 1 September to 21 December. Agents call these figures a guideline, so get a quote for your exact dates. Our page on the best time to visit Zanzibar explains what each month means for the weather.

On top, plan for the Zanzibar infrastructure tax, reported at $5 per person per nightand paid locally. We could not confirm it on the hotel's own pages, so check your booking terms.

What the Kilindi all inclusive covers

More than most all inclusive plans. It covers three meals, house wines, local beer and house spirits, tea, coffee and soft drinks, the minibar, laundry, sundowners, the butler, kayaks and paddleboards, and a 15 minute spa treatment once. The house wines come from South Africa, Italy, France and Lebanon. What you pay for: champagne, the private cellar list and premium spirits, plus spa treatments and excursions.

For how this compares with the big resorts of the east coast, see our Zanzibar all inclusive guide.

Kilindi Zanzibar special offers and honeymoon rates

The hotel publishes four offers for 2026. The long stay deal is the one that changes the price most: 25% off from five nights brings the autumn rate close to $510 per person.

Kilindi Zanzibar location: Kendwa, the north west coast and the airport

Kilindi is at Kendwa, on the north west coast of Unguja, the main island. The coast faces west, which means sunsets over the sea every evening, and it is one of the calmer stretches of the island. Its address is given as Nungwi, the village two kilometres up the coast: Nungwi beach has the restaurants, the dhow builders and the bustle that Kendwa does not.

From Zanzibar airport (ZNZ), the drive takes about one hour to one hour and a quarter. Elewana gives both figures. Stone Town is about an hour and a half by road, which guests list among the downsides: a day trip to town is a commitment.

The hotel arranges transfers at a supplement. A figure of $125 per vehicle each way circulates on booking sites, but we could not trace it to the hotel. A driver booked yourself for the north usually costs less, and our page on Zanzibar airport transfers has the current rates by zone. Either way, send your flight number so the driver can follow a late landing.

The beach at Kilindi Zanzibar: low tide and sunset

The hotel has its own stretch of white sand along the length of the property, and at high water it is everything the photos promise. The rest of Kendwa beach is known for keeping swimmable water at every tide. In front of Kilindi, two independent accounts say otherwise.

Travel+Style writes that low tide withdraws the water very far from the beach. A guest in February 2025 had to walk 10 to 20 minutes along the sand to reach water deep enough to swim, and mentioned a smell from the exposed shore. Tripadvisor reviewers give the same advice: ask for the tide sheet the hotel hands out and plan your sea swims around high water.

In between, the 25 metre infinity pool and your own plunge pool take over, and the sunset is there whatever the tide does. Our Zanzibar tides guide shows how to read a tide table for your dates.

Kilindi Zanzibar restaurant, bar and spa

There is one restaurant and bar, with a terrace over the infinity pool and the sea. The cooking is modern European with Zanzibari dishes, and part of the vegetables come from the hotel's organic garden. Breakfast runs from 7 to 11 am, lunch from noon to 5 pm and dinner from 6 to 10 pm, which suits late risers.

  • Kilindi Dining. Cook with the chef, a Zanzibari curry for example, then eat what you made.
  • In-villa dining. A floating breakfast in your plunge pool, or a five course dinner on your terrace.
  • Dining by Design. A barbecue on the beach, or dinner on a dhow.

For fifteen pavilions one restaurant is enough. Over a week, though, it means the same menu and the same roomevery night. Kendwa's beach restaurants are a walk along the sand if you want a change, though you will pay for those meals on top.

The spa has a Turkish hammamas well as treatment rooms, and the all inclusive rate includes one 15 minute discovery treatment. Longer treatments are charged. Rainwater collected from the conical roofs and the breeze through glassless windows are part of the hotel's low impact design.

Is Kilindi Zanzibar adults only?

Yes, strictly. The hotel policy reads "Children not accommodated. Infants not accommodated." The two bedroom villa is described as suitable for families with children aged 18 or older. Some booking sites give a minimum age of 16, but the hotel does not say so, so assume 18.

If you travel with children, Zuri Zanzibar, a few minutes up the same coast, accepts all ages. Our guide to where to stay in Zanzibar with kids covers the rest. One more point for older or less mobile guests: steep paths and steps to some pavilions and bathrooms make Kilindi harder going than a flat resort.

Things to do from Kilindi Zanzibar

  • Included. Kayaks, paddleboards, the infinity pool, and sundowners.
  • Through the hotel. A private sunset dhow of two to three hours, ten minutes from the hotel, deep sea fishing, Stone Town and a spice farm.
  • Day trips. Safari Blue in Menai Bay, in the far south west, which means an early start from the north.

Most boat trips and tours collect from Kendwa hotels. Booking yourself is often cheaper than the hotel desk for the same boat, but check that the pickup point is Kilindi before you pay.

Questions people ask about Kilindi Zanzibar

Is Kilindi Zanzibar adults only?

Yes. The hotel's policy says children and infants are not accommodated. The two bedroom villa is sold for adults aged 18 and over, so it suits two couples or a parent travelling with grown children.

How many villas does Kilindi Zanzibar have?

Fifteen. The hotel calls them pavilions or villas: white domed buildings spread over about 50 acres of garden, each with its own plunge pool, outdoor shower and butler. One of them has two bedrooms and two pools.

Is Kilindi Zanzibar all inclusive?

Yes. Rates include all meals, house wines, local beer, house spirits, soft drinks, the minibar, laundry, sundowners and non motorised water sports such as kayaks and paddleboards. Champagne, cellar wines and premium spirits are charged.

How far is Kilindi Zanzibar from the airport?

About an hour to an hour and a quarter by road from Zanzibar airport (ZNZ), and about an hour and a half from Stone Town. The hotel arranges transfers at a supplement.

Can you swim at Kilindi Zanzibar at low tide?

Not easily. Reviewers report that the water goes a long way out at low tide in front of the hotel, and one guest walked 10 to 20 minutes along the beach to find swimmable water. Ask for the hotel's tide sheet and use the 25 metre infinity pool or your own pool in between.

Was Kilindi built for Benny Andersson of ABBA?

The hotel's operator says the property was originally designed for Benny Andersson. The architect was Neil Rocher. It is now run by the Elewana Collection, part of Minor Hotels.

When is Kilindi Zanzibar closed?

It usually closes for the long rains in April and May and reopens on 1 June. Booking calendars for 2026 follow that pattern, but check your dates with the hotel before you plan a spring trip.

What are the best 5-star hotels in Zanzibar?

It depends on what you want. Mnemba Island Lodge for a private island, Zuri and Kilindi at Kendwa for the north west sunsets, The Residence for a pool villa in the south, and Park Hyatt for Stone Town. Our luxury hotels page compares them by price.

What is the best part of Zanzibar to stay?

For swimming and sunsets, the north west around Kendwa and Nungwi. For kitesurfing and long tidal flats, Paje on the east coast. For history, a night or two in Stone Town. Many visitors combine Stone Town with a week on a beach.
