Why the seven o'clock boat matters
By mid morning there can be twenty boats on the same stretch of reef, and the water goes from glass to churn. The gap between a seven o'clock departure and a nine thirty one is not a matter of taste.
Early also means better light underneath, before the wind gets up and the surface starts scattering it. Operators know this perfectly well, and the good ones leave early without being asked.
It is the single most useful thing on this page. Every other variable, the boat, the guide, the price, matters less than the hour you get in the water.

Can you land on Mnemba Island
No. The island is leased to a single small resort and the beach, the trees and the sand spit all belong to its guests. Boats are kept off it, and the rule is enforced.
It matters less than it sounds. The reef is the reason to come, the water around the atoll is public, and the aerial photograph everybody has seen was taken from a drone rather than from the sand. Treat a promised landing as a sign to book with somebody else.

Mnemba with dolphins, and the catch
Half the listings bundle dolphins into the morning, because bottlenose are resident in the channel and people search for them. A good operator slows down, holds position, and lets you watch from the deck.
A bad one drives at the pod until somebody is in the water with them. That is the practice swimming with dolphins in Zanzibar has been criticised for over two decades, and it is no better here.

Best time of year for visibility
- February and March. The flattest water of the year, between the monsoons, and the best visibility you will get.
- October and November. The second flat window, with the short rains arriving in the afternoons rather than the mornings.
- June to September. The kusi trade winds. Trips still run, the crossing is wetter, and the surface chop cuts what you can see.

Questions people ask about Mnemba
Can I snorkel at Mnemba Island in Zanzibar?
You can snorkel the reef around it, which is where the value is, and that is what every trip sells. You cannot land on the island itself. Mnemba is a private resort and the beach belongs to its guests, so anybody selling you a landing is selling something they cannot deliver.
How much does a Mnemba snorkelling trip cost?
Thirty five to seventy dollars for a shared boat from Matemwe, masks and fins included, plus a ten dollar conservation fee per adult that is often collected separately. A private boat runs from about a hundred and fifty and buys the one thing that changes the morning, which is leaving at seven rather than nine.
Is Mnemba Island worth visiting?
The reef is, and there is no close second within reach of the coast. If you do one thing in the water on this island, do this, and do it on the first boat. If you have snorkelled the Red Sea or the Great Barrier Reef it will be good rather than remarkable.
Which beach in Zanzibar is best for snorkelling?
Matemwe, because it is the closest launch point to Mnemba and the fringing reef offshore is decent in its own right. Nungwi and Kendwa have deep water and dive centres but no reef you can swim to. The east coast lagoons at Paje and Jambiani are shallow, seagrass bottomed and not snorkelling water at all.
Is snorkelling in Zanzibar worth it?
At Mnemba, yes. Elsewhere on the island it is pleasant rather than a reason to travel, because most of the coast is lagoon behind a reef crest rather than reef you can reach from the sand. Manage the expectation and you will have a good morning.
